I’ve been thinking a lot recently about my writing. Here’s why:
I’ve noticed that there are days, usually several days in a row where I can barely put the pen down. The words flow easily and I can’t get the words and ideas out of my head fast enough.
Then, there are times, like my last several days. My mind and my free-flowing thoughts seem to have gone awol.
Most of the time, when that happens, I shrug and tell myself, “Oh well, I’ll write again when I feel like it.”
But this time is different. I found that I wanted to want to write. I hope that makes sense. I thought I should probably figure out why this happened to me on occasion.
Here’s what I learned about myself. I hope it helps you when you’re too tired or overwhelmed to pick up a pen (or sit at the computer) and get your creativity flowing.
I’ve Realized:
- It takes more than I ever realized to write
- I need to prepare to write, and I don’t mean by grabbing a notebook and pen
- I need to jumpstart my writer’s brain and get it flowing smoothly again. More times than not, it doesn’t happen on its own
- I have to do things to get myself back into the writing groove
Just like an athlete needs to warm-up, stretch, and mentally prepare, each day before they begin the actual activity. Writers, in their own way, need to do the same.
Here are a Few Questions to Ask Yourself if you Need to Get Back Your Writing Groove:
- What motivates me to write in the first place?
- What and who are my biggest writing inspirations and why?
- What does my ideal writing space (today) look like?
- What could you give yourself or do for yourself to re-light your spark?
- What can I do, be, have, to get me back on the writing track?
In answering those questions myself, here’s what happened:
- I reminded myself why I love to write
- I thought about all of the people who encourage me and why they care about me
- I asked myself what i could do to make my writing, even more pleasurable
- I thought on what my ideal writing space would look like today
I packed up my notebook, pen, laptop, sports bottle full of lemonade, and drove ten minutes to the park and rose garden.
I’m currently sitting on a park bench with a beautiful view of the water, sculptures, flowers, and people enjoying the day with their families. The feature picture of this post is one I took moments ago.
I can honestly say, the view is spectacular and my writing fog has lifted. The thoughts are flowing so quickly, my pen can’t keep up.
My writing brain is once again running on all cylinders.
Go out and experience something beautiful today. You’re worth it and the world needs to read your fabulous creations. Let me know what you think.
Happy Writing! Gina
