How to Use All Five Senses in Your Writing

With a Free Worksheet

In this post, at the bottom, I’ve included a free worksheet for you. I noticed that I tend to slack off in my writing at times and while I try to show and not tell, I sometimes show with only two senses, sight and sound.

I’ve seen other writers do the same. We tend to use sight and sound the most, forgetting to use the rest of the senses in our writing.

I’ve discovered a fun exercise that came to me after watching a sappy Hallmark Christmas special, believe it or not.

The main two characters were writers and the male lead took the male female to a fancy New York hotel that she wrote about in her manuscript but failed to describe with enough of the senses. He had her describe what she saw using all her senses with as much feeling as she could muster.

It got me thinking and it has since advanced my writing. I’ve created a worksheet for you to help get you started, if you could use a bit of help in that area. Make sure you don’t over-describe every little thing. Do just enough to bring your scenes to life.

Have fun and share your results and comments in the Facebook group, The Ins and Outs of Novel Writing.
