7 Free & Low Cost Sites to Grow Your Writing Skills

February 10, 2020 0 Comments

We all need help every now and then I’ve found a few free or low cost writing resources to be invaluable in helping me advance and grow my writing chops. Some of what I’ve found are free, some are a few dollars, but worth it.

1. Reedsy- www.reedsy.com

Reedsy is a free site that gives writers, authors and publishers access to talented professionals, powerful tools, writing skill help and free educational content.

I signed up for their free newsletter and I check their web page regularly. I’ve learned some wonderful information from them. They give you writing advice, offer editing services, and much more. Check them out.

2. Grammarly- www.grammarly.com

Grammarly is a wonderful program and site. They have a premium version, but I find the free version is perfectly adequate.

Grammarly scans your text for common grammatical mistakes and complex ones. They’ll give you detailed explanations for all your mistakes and help you avoid making them again in the future.

If you love to write, but aren’t as confident in your grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, as you’d like, this program can give you some peace of mind and confidence.

3. Udemy- www.udemy.com

Udemy is fantastic. They have a great app that’ll take you directly to their content. It’s a site you can access online or through that app. They have over 100,000 free and paid courses and classes in a plethora of subjects. A few examples are: writing, editing, blogging, marketing, personal development, and the list goes on and on. Check them out. You’ll feel like a kid on Christmas morning.

4. Jerry Jenkins- www.jerryjenkins.com

I love this guy. What I learned from his free content, blog, and free newsletter has been invaluable.

Jerry Jenkins is the author of over 22 books with sales of more than 71 million copies. His website, blog, and newsletter offers: articles, writing tools, courses, and much more.

This man’s site is definitely worth your time. Have a notebook or laptop handy. You’re going to want to take a lot of notes.

5. Emotional Thesaurus

One of these is essential to your writing tool box, in my opinion. There’s a great one on Amazon titled, “The Emotional Thesaurus- A Writer’s Guide to Character Expression.” It’s 17.09 for the paperback and 5.99 for the Kindle version.

With this book, you won’t have to worry about using repetitive words or weak descriptive words. It’s such a handy tool to have.

6. Stephen King’s “On Writing”

I read this and was happy I did. He talks of his road to fame and gives a good bit of no nonsense advice on writing. The paperback is around 15.00 and the Kindle version is 12.99.

I’ll bet that if you do a bit of digging, you’ll be able to find a lower cost used version, maybe even your local library.

7. Writer’s Digest/Writing Articles (archived articles)

That is what I typed in Google to find a large amount of free archived Writer’s Digest articles.

They don’t have the abundance of information as the other sites I’ve mentioned, but it’s still highly worth a look-see.

I hope you find the above suggestions as informative as I have. Head on over to my Facebook Group, https://www.facebook.com/groups/202557397569227/?ref=bookmarks and let me know what you think.

Happy Writing!

Check out, “The Orphanage” on Amazon. Only 2.99
