Holiday Short Story Contest

November 7, 2022 0 Comments

Hello, Everyone,

Please read carefully, as I’m doing things a bit differently this time around. I hope this will ensure more than one person takes part.

Here’s What I’m Doing Differently

If you’re going to enter this contest, say so in the comment section of this post. If I get at least three commitments, I’ll hold the contest. If not, I won’t have it.

Please, please, please enter. It’s much more fun to have a real competition. And of course, let’s not overlook the FABULOUS PRIZE. Haha. This prize will be a handmade bookmark. Ooooooh, I bet you’re salivating already. Haha

Ok, now, on to the contest!!!

Here are the rules:

  • Choose one of the prompts below
  • Stories must be between 1000 – 3000 words, in 12 pt Times New Roman.
  • Include your name and the chosen prompt at the top of your story
  • Pay special attention to grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. I am going to put all entries into Grammarly Premium and Hemingway. If there are more than five mistakes, I won’t consider your story. I’m not trying to be mean, but if one is to make it as a professional writer, this is arguably one of the most important things to consider. There isn’t a publisher in the world who would accept a poorly written story full of errors. Please put your story into a good online editor and read it out loud to someone. You’ll catch the mistakes.
  • All entries must be submitted by 11/21/22 midnight EST.
  • Submit story to writeon22@writeon22
  • The prize will be a handmade crochet flower bookmark.

Prompts: These prompts are of the horror genre’, BUT…. I want you to write them with a holiday theme (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc.)

  1. The grinning face stared at me from the darkness beyond my bedroom window. I live on the 14th floor.
  2. I begin tricking him into bed and he tells me, “Daddy, check for monsters under my bed.” I look underneath for his amusement and see him, another him, under the bed, staring back at me quivering and whispering, “Daddy, there’s somebody on my bed.”
  3. I awoke to hear heavy knocking on glass at first. I thought it was the window until I heard it come from the mirror again.
  4. Waking, I thought I felt the tips of her long blonde hair brush over my face, down my neck, and onto my chest. “Oh, my God,” she stammered from the doorway, “don’t move.”

Ok, so, choose one of the above horror prompts, and somehow make it into a scary holiday themed story. Have fun, and don’t forget to let me know in the comments if you are entering.

Happy Writing! Gina
