Most people mean well, but they don’t always realize that their advice can be stifling, unnecessary, and hurtful. I read countless times that we should prepare ourselves for and welcome criticism. To me, that applies if you’re going the traditional publisher route.

But if you’re like me and go the self-published route, you don’t have to deal with negative criticism.

I’m not telling you to never ask for advice or for no one to critique your work. I’m just saying to only allow certain types of critique, the kind that improves your work. Ignore the critique that tells you to change your work or to do it their way.

If people notice mistakes in grammar, punctuation, flow, plot holes, areas that are confusing, etc., then by all means listen and make necessary corrections. But, if people say, “What I think you should do,” or “What should happen here is…” then I suggest thanking them for their input and staying true to yourself. It’s your story.

Below is a simple worksheet that’s not all-encompassing, but should give you an idea of how to remain on your own writing ideas and not how everyone else would do it. I hope it helps at least gives you a few ideas to keep in your own head, after all, that’s where all your brilliant ideas lie in waiting. Just trust and believe in yourself and you can’t go wrong.
