Be Brave and Start That Book
“The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.” — Louis L’Amour
If you’ve been browsing through my posts and still haven’t started your writing, this post is for you.
If you have doubts, I’m going to ask you to put them away in a little box in the back corner of your mind for now. Those doubts aren’t serving you.
As the author, Jodi Picoult says, “You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank one.”
If, after reading my blog post, Step #1, you still haven’t started on that book you’ve always wanted to write, I’m here to tell you that you can absolutely do it.
Start Small:
- Go buy a few attractive notebooks if you haven’t already. (Amazon has great ones and I’ve seen a few nice ones at Target)
- Get a nice pen
- Get a pack of index cards to jot down and keep track of ideas
That’s a good place to start. If you’ve already done that, then open that pack of index cards and randomly jot down some of your thoughts for your story.
One idea is to start with a few character name ideas and personality traits.
Jot down some ideas of a story line and maybe what could happen at the beginning, middle, and end of your book.
That’s it, to start. It might not seem like a whole lot, but it is a great start. It will help you to get into the flow. A few ideas spark others.
Still need a boost?
If you’re still overwhelmed, no worries. Click on my Contact Page and send me an email. Let’s set up a life coaching session and I’ll help you to get started. An hour session is only $35.00.
I believe in you. If you couldn’t do this, you wouldn’t even have the interest. Trust yourself.
Happy Writing!

Great post!
Thank you so much. Sweet to take the time to say.
This is just what I needed today! Thanks so much ☺️
So glad to hear that, Merryl
Yes – very much like that – you can edit a bad page, not a blank one! Plus you need to turn the faucet on to get water. I have so much paper in my home office – I might see if I can borrow the idea of your index cards and make some scrap paper work. Thanks for a great little post!
So glad it was helpful
I have always wanted to write a book but fear of failure has kept me from actually doing or finishing it. I started my blog recently and it is very therapeutic but that is going slow and the nagging urge to write a book is still there. I am reading through your posts and taking notes to get started again. I’ve gotta start believing in me and yes “the time is write” so thank you, I will be following your blog and signing up for that life coaching session ASAP!
Angela, that’s fantastic. You just made my day. I love hearing that.
