Below you’ll find 3 Short Story Writing Prompts. Choose the one you lilke and here are the rules:
Short Story Contest Rules:
- Choose one prompt
- Story must be between 1,000 – 3,000 words
- Type in a Word document, 12 pt., Times New Roman, double spaced
- Submit story along with the email address you’d like me to respond to if you win. If you win, I’ll email you and then you can respond with the address to where you’d like me to send your prize.
- Deadline for submission is Friday, February 7, Midnight, EST
Prizes will be:
- The winning short story will be featured on my blog, thetimeiswrite.com, my Facebook page, The Time is Write, and in my Facebook Group, The Ins and Outs of Novel Writing
- A hand etched glass with the design of your choice, crafted by me
Stories will be judged on grammar, punctuation, sticking to the theme, story intrigue, dynamic characters, and a stunning conclusion.

Prompt #1:
There is a bank robbery going on and your protagonist happens to be one of the hostages tied up by the robbers. The police are outside but can’t move in because of the hostages.
In the heat of frustration your protagonist makes eye contact with someone who is quietly looking for a way to escape.
How did they work together to save all the hostages? Where did their relationship grow after that?
Prompt #2:
A dying single woman who has just 3 weeks to live, asks her male doctor to discharge her so she can spend her last days with her dog. Out of sympathy, the doctor follows her home, but for some reason, he refuses to let her be alone with her dog. Why? And why didn’t she die after 3 weeks?
Prompt #3:
Start your story with a sentence that is genuinely happy and upbeat, n o double meanings.
End it with the same sentence, but this time it’s chilling, dark, horrifying.
