How to Find Time for Writing When you Have No Time to Write

July 20, 2020 0 Comments

I used to work six days a week. Now, I work very part-time at home. That’s partly due to circumstances, but mostly due to how terrible Fibromyalgia has become.

However, when I did work all those hours, all t hose days, I ALWAYS made time for myself, no matter how short the amount, every day.

Taking time for you, insisting upon it every day, is incredibly important to mental health and well-being. My mother has always called it ‘food for the soul.’ I tend to agree that taking some time every day for the things that bring you joy is indeed, food for the soul.

I wanted to create this post today, to give you a few suggestions of how to be able to write when you feel you can’t carve out time for yourself.

Our lives are full of inspiration, if we take the time to look around us and pay attention. You never know when inspiration will strike and I encourage you to be ready. I’ve discussed this subject before, but I wanted to add some additional ideas here.

Here is a short list of 3 ways to collect your ideas and thoughts on the go.

3 Ways to Write When You’re Busy

  1. Index cards or a pocket-sized notebook: Have them on you, so wherever you are, you can jot down thoughts, ideas, or even a paragraph or two when you’re on the fly.
  2. Notes app: Have one of the many note apps that smartphones offer. If you don’t have a pen and paper on you, you usually have your phone. I have multiple notes saved in my app. I use them to write lists of ideas, character names, chapters, etc. You can save your thoughts and jot them down once you’re in front of a notebook or a computer.
  3. Tape recorder (small, hand-held) or voice recorder app: If you don’t want to carry with you a pen and paper/note cards, you can use a small voice recorder or the voice recorder app that comes with most smartphones to record your thoughts. Some even convert your talk to text for you. I find the voice recorder app extremely helpful. You can use it just about anywhere.

I hope you find these three ideas helpful. They’ve been key to my never having an idea come and go before I had a chance to get it written. You can always work on your novel or other writing projects, even if you piece work it with the above ideas.

Leave me a comment if you find these suggestions helpful and to tell me a few of your own.

Have a wonderful week. Stay safe and healthy and as always, Happy Writing!
